Microsoft recently announced that as of October 13, 2020, they will no longer provide support for Microsoft Office 2013 software connecting to back-end Office 365 services. In other words, if you have a retail desktop version of Office 2013 (the kind you purchase and install on a desktop computer), it will no longer be supported when connecting to services such as Microsoft Exchange 365 email services.

What does this mean to you?

Microsoft licensing can be complicated. What you need to do depends on what version of Microsoft Office products you are using. 3Nines Technologies can provide help with your Microsoft licensing process. Understanding Microsoft Office 365 Product Licensing

It is important to understand the difference between desktop products such as Microsoft Office 2013, 2016 and 2019 and cloud-based products such as Office 365.

Microsoft Office family of products consists of back-end services such as Exchange email, OneDrive file sharing, Sharepoint and Teams. Front-end desktop software is either one-time licenses or monthly licensed.

Desktop Products

Desktop products such as Office 2013, 2016 and 2019 can be purchased via retail stores, purchased and downloaded from the internet, or installed on a new computer when it is shipped. This software is designed to run stand-alone without internet service. These products can connect to the Microsoft Office 365 cloud for email, file sharing, OneNote and other services, but it is not a requirement. They are a one-time purchase product without monthly licensing fees for the desktop applications. Each time you want a major upgrade to the software, you will pay a new license fee.

Cloud Products

Office 365 is a cloud-based licensing scheme and product. You pay monthly or annually per user to use Microsoft Office 365 products. They are designed with connectivity to the Office 365 products in mind and are tightly integrated with the Microsoft cloud. Office 365 products are regularly updated by Microsoft and since you are paying a monthly fee, you constantly get new features and upgrades at no extra cost.

Cloud Services

Cloud services are products such as Microsoft Exchange email service, OneDrive file sharing service, Sharepoint web service, and a host of other server-based products. These back-end services are typically (but not always) included in your monthly subscription license with Microsoft.
These cloud services are an optional monthly service fee for users of Office 2013, 2016 and 2019 desktop products.
